Of the 24 million people who live in Uganda, more than half are under the age of 15. 2.5 million of these children have lost one or both parents to civil war or AIDS. The death rate for children under five is 13%, due to malnutrition, disease and extreme poverty. Half of the entire population in Uganda has inadequate access to clean water. Poor sanitation is widespread, and there is limited access to health care. The average annual income in Uganda is $300.00. The average life expectancy is 55 years.

Children from the northern part of Uganda have been scarred by civil war. Some watched as their parents were shot, maimed or beaten to death. Some were forced to inflict the damage themselves. Many had no choice but to become child soldiers. Some managed to escape to the bush and then ended up living with extended family or on the street.

Children from other parts of Uganda have been touched by AIDS. One or both of their parents have succumbed to it, and many of the children have tested positive themselves.

These children are all affected by poverty, hunger, disease, loneliness, uncertainty about their education and uncertainty about their future.

Since 2007, Change the Truth has been providing assistance to 180 of these orphans — those who have found their way to St. Mary Kevin.

Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Change the Truth…

  • More than 30 children now receive academic scholarships for secondary school, college or vocational school.
  • Three meals are served each day at the orphanage supplemented with fruits, vegetables and meat.
  • A full-time social worker, employed by Change the Truth, now lives at the orphanage to look after the needs of the children, track the academic progress of our sponsored students and to help ensure the best use of the financial grants we award.
  • Musical instruments and uniforms have been provided to form the SMK marching band. The band provides an enrichment opportunity for the children as well as an additional source of income for the orphanage.
  • A computer lab and library have been established to enhance the children’s learning and provide the necessary skills for future success.

Though much has been accomplished, there is always more to be done. There are more children to educate. School fees and food costs continue to rise. Capital improvements need to be made.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Change the Truth. The children will be so happy to know that you are in their corner.
